What does an assembly mechanic do?

As an assembly mechanic, you assemble mechanical parts into a working whole. This may involve large production machines, fine mechanical components or complete installations. You often work on the basis of technical drawings, parts lists and assembly instructions. Accuracy, technical insight and practical work are essential in this job.

Important tasks of a mechanical assembly technician are:

Your work environment as an assembly mechanic

You will usually work in a production or workshop environment, sometimes also on site at customers' premises if it involves final assembly or installation. You will work independently or in a small team, under the supervision of a production manager or team leader.

For a job as an assembly mechanic, you need more than technical insight. You also need to be able to work well together and in a structured way. The key competences are:

Education and experience

For the position of assembly mechanic, an MBO degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or similar is usually required. Do you not have a diploma, but do you have demonstrable experience in engineering? Then there are often opportunities through on-the-job training or apprenticeships.
