Quality manager: director of quality, processes and improvement

What does a quality manager do?

The quality manager is responsible for developing, implementing and managing quality policy within an organisation. Whether it concerns product quality, process control, customer satisfaction or certifications - as a quality manager, you keep the overview and control.

In many companies, you also manage a team, collaborate with departments such as production, engineering, R&D and purchasing, and act as a discussion partner for external parties in audits or supplier assessments.

 

Typical tasks of a quality manager:

  • Establishing and updating the quality management system (KMS)
  • Monitoring and improving processes and procedures
  • Supervise internal and external audits (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, IATF 16949)
  • Analysing deviations, complaints and incidents
  • Preparing reports and quality analyses
  • Training and advising colleagues on quality awareness
  • Collaborating with production, engineering and supply chain
  • Coordinating improvement processes and lean initiatives

What do you need to become a quality manager?

As a quality manager, you combine technical knowledge with an understanding of processes and regulations. You have organisational skills, analytical thinking and persuasiveness. You know how to implement change and get people on board.

Important qualifications and attributes:

  • HBO or WO education in a technical or business field (e.g. mechanical engineering, chemistry, process engineering or technical business administration)
  • Experience with quality management systems (such as ISO, HACCP, GMP, IATF)
  • Knowledge of lean, Six Sigma or other improvement methods is an advantage
  • Analytical, accurate and result-oriented
  • Good communication skills and a proactive attitude
  • Experience in carrying out audits and reporting
  • Command of the Dutch and English language
