What does a customer service representative do?

As a customer service representative, you are the first point of contact for customers via phone, e-mail, chat or social media. You answer questions about products, services, deliveries or invoices, and actively think along to find solutions. You ensure that every customer feels heard and helped.

Depending on the company, you will work in a team in a customer service department, at a helpdesk or in a service-oriented office.

Common tasks:

  • Answering incoming phone calls and emails
  • Informing customers about products, services and procedures
  • Processing customer data and recording contact moments
  • Resolving or forwarding complaints, returns or faults
  • Advising on orders, changes or contract questions
  • Collaborating with other departments such as logistics, sales or planning
  • Identifying common questions or problems

You have an important role in maintaining customer satisfaction. You communicate clearly, friendly and professionally: even if the customer is dissatisfied or has a complaint.

  • Business services - helpdesk functions and administrative support
  • Government and healthcare organisations - informative or registering customer service

We offer positions at both large organisations with professional call centres and SMEs with smaller, personal customer service departments.

What skills do you need as a customer service representative?

A good customer service officer is communicatively strong, stress-resistant and able to empathise with the customer. You keep a cool head in busy situations and know how to prioritise. You work neatly, accurately and you think along with solutions.

Key skills and attributes:

  • MBO or college work and thinking level
  • Excellent command of the Dutch language (oral and written)
  • Customer-oriented and service-oriented attitude
  • Good computer skills (experience with CRM systems is an advantage)
  • Problem-solving and able to work independently
  • Empathy and patience
  • Team player with a proactive attitude

For some positions, fluency in a second language (such as English or German) is an advantage. For technical customer services, an affinity with technology or ICT is desirable.
