What does an electrician do?

As an electrician, you work on a variety of electrical installations, depending on the sector and the type of project. These could be installations in homes, business premises, factories, machinery or infrastructure. Your work consists of installing, connecting, testing and maintaining electrical systems.

Typical work as an electrician:

  • Laying and connecting cabling, switch boxes and distribution equipment
  • Assembling electrical components and installations
  • Reading electrical drawings and diagrams
  • Troubleshooting and repairs
  • Testing, adjusting and commissioning installations
  • Working according to the applicable safety standards (such as NEN 1010 and NEN 3140)

You work independently or in a team, on location or in a workshop, and are often the first point of contact for colleagues or customers on the shop floor.

What skills do you need as an electrician?

A good electrician has technical insight, is precise and can work safely with electricity. Because you regularly switch between different jobs or malfunctions, flexibility is also important. It is also essential that you can read drawings well and install installations according to applicable standards.

Important competences for an electrician:

  • Completed mbo education in electrical engineering (level 2, 3 or 4)
  • Knowledge of installation technology and cabling systems
  • Experience with low-voltage installations and/or control technology
  • Ability to work independently and accurately
  • In possession of a VCA certificate or willing to obtain one

Do you have no experience yet, but do you have technical insight and motivation? If so, we would be happy to consider a work-study programme or BBL training to become an electrical fitter.
