What does a CNC milling machine do?

As a CNC miller, you machine metal workpieces using a CNC milling machine. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. You set the programme, choose the right tools and ensure that the machine performs the operation accurately. Based on technical drawings and specifications, you produce parts that are often accurate down to the hundredth millimetre.

The work of a CNC miller includes:

  • Setting, adjusting and operating CNC milling machines
  • Reading technical drawings and work orders
  • Programming the machine (e.g. via Heidenhain, Siemens or FANUC)
  • Checking dimensions, tolerances and surface quality
  • Performing minor maintenance and identifying malfunctions

CNC millers work with various materials such as steel, aluminium, stainless steel and plastics. The parts produced are often used in high-tech applications, where precision is of the utmost importance.

What do you need to become a CNC miller?

A good CNC miller has technical insight, an eye for detail and the ability to work independently and accurately. Working with advanced machinery requires responsibility, solution-oriented thinking and a good understanding of machining technology.

Important skills:

  • Knowledge of CNC technology and machining principles.
  • Experience with or interest in CNC programming
  • Independence and accuracy
  • Spatial insight and ability to read technical drawings
  • Willingness to work in shifts (if applicable)

A completed MBO education in mechanical engineering or machining (such as All-round Machinist or Precision Engineering) is often a requirement. No experience yet, but motivated? If so, we will be happy to work with you on intake and training programmes.
