What does an installation engineer do?

As an installation technician, you will be responsible for laying and assembling installations within homes, business premises or industrial environments. You work on new projects, but also on renovations or service jobs. You work independently or together with colleagues and follow technical drawings, schedules and work orders.

You have a varied job, where you regularly work on location and have a lot of customer contact. Accuracy, professional knowledge and a practical attitude are essential in this job.

Typical work of an installation technician:

  • Laying gas, water and central heating pipes
  • Installing heating systems, radiators and boilers
  • Installation of sanitary facilities
  • Installing and connecting ventilation or air-conditioning systems
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance work
  • Reading installation drawings and diagrams
  • Checking and testing installations
  • Working according to applicable safety regulations (such as NEN 3140 or NEN 1006)

You often work together with planners, supervisors and other technicians. In some positions you are specialised (e.g. mechanical fitter), in others you are all-round deployable.

What do you need to become an installation engineer?

As an installation engineer, it is important that you have technical insight and can work accurately. You must also be able to interact well with customers and colleagues, and adhere to safety and installation regulations.

Requirements and skills:

  • MBO education towards installation engineering or mechanical engineering (at least level 2 or 3)
  • Relevant work experience is a plus, but not always required
  • In possession of a valid VCA certificate or willing to obtain one
  • Ability to read technical drawings and diagrams
  • Ability to work independently, neatly and customer-oriented
  • Driving licence B is often required (for service or assembly work on location)
