What does a buyer do?

As a buyer, you ensure that products, materials or services are available at the right time, in the right quantity and at the right price. You maintain contacts with suppliers, conduct price and contract negotiations and monitor delivery agreements. You will also help optimise processes and work closely with departments such as production, logistics, R&D and finance.

The job may vary per sector: from technical buyer to project buyer or strategic buyer. In all cases, you are an indispensable link within the procurement process.

Common tasks of a buyer:

  • Selecting, assessing and maintaining contacts with suppliers

What skills do you need as a buyer?

A good buyer is communicatively strong, results-oriented and knows how to find the right balance between price, quality and delivery reliability. You like to negotiate, think commercially as well as strategically and are good with figures and deadlines.
