What does a welder do?

A common question is: what exactly does a welder do? The answer is simple and yet multifaceted. As a welder, you ensure that metal parts are joined firmly and accurately. You work with different techniques and materials, often on the basis of technical drawings. Your job is to ensure durable and safe connections that meet the set standards and requirements.

Tasks of a welder may include:

  • Pre-processing metal parts such as sawing, grinding or bonding
  • Reading technical drawings or work orders
  • Applying welding techniques such as MIG MAG TIG or electrode welding
  • Visually checking the welding work
  • Finishing or reworking weld seams if necessary
  • Working according to safety regulations and quality standards

In some jobs, you work on location, for example on constructions or pipe work. In other cases, you will work in a workshop on serial or specialist welding work.

What types of welders are there?

Another frequently asked question is: what types of welders are there? The most common types are:

  • MIG welder: You work with a semi-automatic welding technique mainly used with steel and aluminium
  • MAG welder: almost identical to MIG welding but suitable for unprotected steels
  • TIG welder: fine and precise welding with a high finish quality, often used for thin materials or stainless steels
  • Electrode welder: widely used in construction and industry, also suitable for outdoor work

In addition, there are all-round welders who master several techniques. These are often versatile and highly sought-after in the market.

How do you become a welder?

To become a welder, you usually need a technical MBO degree in metalworking, mechanical or construction engineering. This is often at level 2 or 3.

In addition, it is important that you gain practical experience, for example through a BBL route or internship. Many employers also require valid welding certificates, such as a NIL diploma or ISO 9606 certificate. Do you not yet have these? Then Euro Planit will help you obtain them via a work-study programme.

What does a welder earn?

A welder's salary depends on your experience, type of welding, certification and employer. As a starter, you will earn on average between €2300 and €2700 gross per month. If you have more experience or work in a specialised sector such as petrochemicals or construction, your salary can reach €3200 euros or more.

In addition, bonuses are possible for shift work or on-site work. Via Euro Planit, you can count on fair working conditions and a salary that matches your knowledge and experience.
