What does a welding robot operator do?

As a welding robot operator, you work with computer-controlled welding robots that weld parts or structures together. You programme or set up the robot, place the work pieces in the correct position and check the end result. You work with various materials, such as steel, stainless steel or aluminium, and ensure consistent quality of the welding work.

In many cases, you work in anindustrial environment, where efficiency, repeatability and accuracy are very important.

What do you need to become a welding robot operator?

As a welding robot operator, you have technical insight, an eye for detail and an affinity for metal and automation. You work in a structured way and can recognise and solve faults independently. Experience with welding (mig/mag or tig) is often desired, but in some cases will be taught internally.

Requirements and characteristics:

  • MBO education in the field of metal, mechanical engineering or mechatronics
  • Experience with mig/mag or tig welding techniques is a big plus
  • Familiarity with CNC, robot or PLC controls is desirable
  • Ability to work independently and accurately
  • Willingness to work in shifts (if applicable)
  • VCA certificate or willingness to obtain one
  • Quality-conscious and process-oriented thinking
