What does a cabinet and panel builder do?

As a cabinet and panel builder, you work in the workshop of a technical company, often in electrical engineering or industrial automation. You assemble electrotechnical components in cabinets or panels that are later installed in machines, control systems or distribution systems.

You work on the basis of diagrams, drawings and bills of materials. The job requires a lot of precision, technical insight and structured work.

Typical tasks of a cabinet and panel builder:

  • Reading and interpreting electrical diagrams
  • Assembling electrical cabinets and control panels
  • Wiring components according to drawing and instructions
  • Assembling relays, PLCs, fuses, cable ducts and power supplies
  • Checking connections and taking measurements
  • Identifying and solving technical bottlenecks
  • If necessary: testing the entire cabinet or panels
  • Working according to applicable safety regulations

Depending on your experience, you can also be deployed for on-site commissioning or supervising colleagues in the workshop.

What skills do you need?

A good technician in cabinet and panel building works in a structured, accurate way and is good at reading technical diagrams. You often work independently on your own cabinet or panel, but are also part of a team working together on larger installations.

Key skills and attributes:

  • Completed mbo education in electrical engineering or similar
  • Experience with reading E-schemes (e.g. EPLAN, SEE Electrical)
  • Knowledge of standards (NEN 1010, NEN-EN-IEC 61439) is an advantage
  • Accurate and structured work attitude
  • Sense of responsibility and safety awareness
  • VCA certificate or willingness to obtain one

Do you have no panel building experience yet, but do have an electrical engineering background or education? Then we would be happy to help you with an entry-level position in which you can learn the trade in practice, possibly with additional training via Euro Planit.
