First Officer in aviation: your stepping stone to the role of captain
As a First Officer (also called co-pilot), you play an essential role in the cockpit. You support the captain in all aspects of the flight and are jointly responsible for a safe and efficient operation. At Euro Planit, we guide you in your career as a First Officer, whether you have just obtained your licence or already have years of experience in aviation. We offer you the right job with reliable airlines, with an eye for your personal growth.
What does a First Officer do?
A First Officer is the second pilot on board and works closely with the captain. You have an active role during the preparation, execution and completion of each flight. Your duties include:
- Checking the flight plan and performing pre-flight checks
- Monitoring flight instruments and systems during the flight
- Communicating with air traffic control
- Operating the aircraft (in rotation with the captain)
- Assist with emergency procedures
- Coordinate with cabin crew and ground teams
So a First Officer is much more than a 'reserve pilot': you are a full member of the cockpit team and a key figure in flight operations.
Your profile as First Officer
To get started as a First Officer, there are clear requirements you need to meet. Employers are looking for pilots with:
- A valid CPL or ATPL (frozen or full)
- A type rating for the relevant aircraft type (or willingness to obtain one)
- At least a Class 1 medical certificate
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- A professional and stress-resistant attitude
- Willingness to work varying schedules and international schedules
Have you just graduated from a flight school or have you already completed hundreds of flight hours? In either case, there are plenty of opportunities through Euro Planit.

Different areas of work for First Officers
Depending on your preferences and qualifications, as a First Officer, you can work in different environments:
Commercial aviation
Here, you will work for regional or international airlines with scheduled services. You will fly fixed routes and work as part of a team with a fixed crew.
Business aviation
As a First Officer on private jets or business flights, you will often have shorter and less predictable flight schedules. You will have to deal with VIP customers and additional responsibilities.
Euro Planit will help you find the work format that best suits your needs and future plans.
Education, training and type ratings
Don't yet have a type rating or have you recently obtained your licence? Then there are several options to still get started:
- Self-sponsored type rating - You invest in a type rating yourself (e.g. B737, A320), often with help from financing.
- Cadet programmes - Some airlines offer training programmes for entry-level pilots.
- Line training - Guided instructional flights to build flying experience.
- Mentored routes - Flying routes with direct feedback from experienced captains.
Euro Planit will guide you in finding employers who offer or support these routes. We take into account your current experience and ambitions to work out a realistic route together.
Advancing to the position of captain
Many First Officers' ultimate goal is to progress to captain. At Euro Planit, we take this into account. We not only mediate on the basis of your current qualifications, but also with your growth potential in mind. We support you in:
- Building up flight hours
- Obtaining additional certificates
- Advancing to command upgrade programmes
- Finding airlines with rapid growth opportunities
Whether you are taking your first steps in the cockpit or are already on your way to the left seat: we think with you.
Flying internationally? That too is possible
Are you willing to work outside the Netherlands? Via Euro Planit, you can also work for airlines abroad.
Benefits of international positions:
- More flying hours in a short time
- Attractive salary packages
- Experience on modern aircraft
- Working in a multicultural environment
We fully support you in the application process, including visa applications, medical examinations and travel planning.
